A Glimpse into the Optima’s Past
The Kia Optima first arrived for the 2001 model year as a sedan that was affordable yet had comfortable amenities. It was available in multiple trims, with a 4-cylinder or 6-cylinder engine, and a range of options. For the 2002 model year, Kia enhanced the V6 engine, expanded the trim levels, added keyless entries, and increased the size of the wheels to 15 inches. The 2003 Optima no longer offered the 4-cylinder engine with a manual transmission, but enhanced the sound to include available Infinity audio, and redesigned the body style. Larger wheels became standard in 2004 and the following year, leather upholstery became available. In 2006, the engines once again improved and a 2006.5 model year had a slightly redesigned interior. A new V6 and larger wheels became available for 2009 with remote start becoming standard in 2010. The Optima was completely redesigned in 2011, and throughout that generation, Kia added the available UVO voice command system, a new touchscreen, blind spot monitoring, parking sensors, and some additional upgrades to the trim levels. The Kia Optima Hybrid debuted in 2011 and mostly followed the changes of the regular Optima throughout the years. Over its lifetime, the Optima has been outfitted with even better features, making it strong competition for sedans like the Accord and Camry.
